Ben Parker
Mandolin/Vocals
Ben Parker is a genre-blending force of nature on strings and reeds, mastering the full mandolin family—from mandolin and mandola to the deep, and resonant mandocello—for good measure. Since the early 2000s, Ben has been pioneering bands and crafting original sounds that push the boundaries of acoustic music.
He first hit the scene with Paul Parker's Backyard Brew, then carried that momentum through Run of the Mill and The Delta Natural, always chasing a diverse, dynamic sound rooted in tradition but reaching into the unexpected. Though playing many instruments, Ben is a master of mandolin family instruments: bringing a fresh edge to every performance.
In recent years, Ben teamed up with Robert Thornhill for the Durham-based project The Reckless Brothers, performing across the Triangle and occasionally joining forces with Hank, Pattie, and The Current. That collaboration helped shape his approach to arrangements, harmony, and improvisation, blending contemporary energy with acoustic roots.
Currently, Ben records with The Appalachian Mandolin Trio, a unique ensemble exploring the expressive range of mandolin-family instruments through both traditional tunes and reimagined classics. He also plays with his son, Owen in Parkers' Mandolin. Their intricate, interwoven melodies showcase Ben’s deep love for the instrument’s history and potential.
He’s diving headfirst into fresh creative territory with Midlife Trip to fuse groove, soul, and improvisation with seasoned songwriting. It’s a new chapter in Ben’s musical journey—one that’s less about looking back and more about turning it up, tuning in, and letting the music ride.
Adam Williams
Guitar/Electric Guitar/Vocals
Hailing from the heart of Louisiana where the blues runs deep, Adam Williams brings soul, grit, and decades of musical passion to Midlife Trip. A High Country local since 1998, Adam has been raising his family in the very mountains that now echo with his sound. Music has always been part of his DNA — his father, a blues musician-turned-preacher, lit the spark early on. From learning blues licks at home to playing piano through his school years, Adam’s musical foundation was steeped in legends like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, SRV, and later, the Grateful Dead.
His guitar journey took off during his days as a raft guide in the late ’90s, where riverside campfires and acoustic jam sessions sharpened his chops. Since 2020, Adam has been channeling that lifelong love for music into Midlife Trip (and Dawgful Dead before that), where his storytelling and sound find a home among kindred spirits and a growing crowd of music lovers.
Chuck Mantooth
Guitar/Vocals
Born and raised in Concord, NC, and now calling the mountain town of Boone home, Chuck Mantooth is the rhythmic engine behind "Midlife Trip." A lifelong lover of music, Chuck’s journey began early, fueled by school band rooms and church stages where he explored drums, trumpet, and piano. His heart beat strongest for percussion, and for years he rocked the drums—until college threw him a curveball. With no room for a drum kit at Appalachian State University, Chuck grabbed an acoustic guitar... and never looked back. That twist of fate ignited a whole new passion. Today, Chuck fuses his drummer’s pulse with melodic storytelling, delivering an acoustic sound that's both driving and soulful—anchoring "Midlife Trip" with groove, grit, and heart.
Craig Barnette
Bass
Born in Charlotte and raised in Hickory, NC, Craig Barnette’s musical journey began early with piano lessons from his mom and a first love for the upright bass in middle school orchestra. From recording albums in high school to running sound for Battle of the Bands concerts, Craig’s passion for rhythm and groove has always run deep.
Craig returned to his upright bass roots after moving to Boone, where he crossed paths with the band. Craig anchors the band’s sound with a deep pocket and a love for musical exploration — always ready to follow the jam wherever it leads, usually with a quick wit that keeps the whole band (and crowd) smiling.
Pat Holmes
Drums/Vocals
Pat Holmes has been laying down grooves since before most of his bandmates could spell “hi-hat.” A lifelong devotee of rhythm, Pat’s passion for percussion is the heartbeat of Midlife Trip. Drawing inspiration from the dual-drum brilliance of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band, Pat honed his craft emulating their seamless synergy and power. Now, behind the kit with Midlife Trip, he brings decades of experience, musical instinct, and raw feel to every performance. His mantra is simple, but profound: "Serve the song."
Mike Mckee
Dobro/Banjo/Harmonica
Mike found his musical home when he landed in Boone in 2007, diving headfirst into the town’s rich tapestry of jams, bluegrass circles, and Americana roots. Whether trading licks at Murphy’s or jamming at the Pedalin’ Pig, he quickly became a familiar face in the High Country scene. Over the years, he’s played with local favorites like Madtom and The Chubs, and lent his sound as a sideman to singer-songwriter Will Easter.
Though he started on rhythm guitar, Mike’s musical palette has since expanded—he’s now adding layers of Dobro, banjo, and harmonica to the mix, always chasing the sound that best serves the song. A longtime member of The Dawgful Dead, he’s now channeling that same freewheeling spirit into Midlife Trip, where acoustic jams meet seasoned soul. For Mike, it’s all about the groove, the people, and loving every minute of the ride.
TJ Corlett
Percussion/Synth/Keys
Born with rhythm in his bones and a drumstick in hand, TJ first caught the music bug banging on pots and pans at his older cousins’ place during family trips to New York. But everything changed when his brother unwrapped a guitar on Christmas morning—suddenly, the jam sessions were on. On his 8th birthday, Grandma sealed the deal with his very first drum kit, and there was no turning back.
From epic living room jams with his brother to forming bands through elementary and middle school, the beat never stopped. By college, TJ was gigging regularly and eventually joined The Weasels in his junior year, diving headfirst into the wild world of college-town music. Now, as a founding member of Midlife Trip, he brings youthful groove, heart, and a whole lotta soul to the stage.
Cole Peters
Keys
Cole Peters is the electrifying piano and keys player for Midlife Trip, bringing a rare mix of virtuosity, soul, and creativity to the band’s sound. A lifelong musician, Cole started playing piano at a young age, quickly showing the kind of natural talent and ear that set him on a fast track toward mastery.
Now studying music at Appalachian State University, Cole has become a standout force in the High Country music scene. His foundations in classical technique, paired with a deep love for modern and traditional jazz, shape his improvisational voice—equal parts adventurous, tasteful, and effortlessly musical.
Whether he’s laying down lush textures, driving rhythmic grooves, or launching into soaring solos, Cole elevates every performance. His versatility and musical maturity anchor the band’s harmonic landscape and push Midlife Trip into fresh, exciting territory.
Offstage, Cole continues to refine his craft, studying under world-class faculty and immersing himself in the rich jazz community at App State. Onstage, he’s the quiet storm—precise, expressive, and always in the pocket.
Richard Edmonsten
Sound Engineer/Lighting
Richard's journey into music began with a snare drum and a school band uniform at the age of nine—and he hasn't looked back since. By 14, he had added guitar to his repertoire, and by 16 he was gigging in local clubs, laying down rhythms and building a foundation that would eventually launch him into the heart of the Appalachian music scene.
In 2007, what started as a humble acoustic trio with a couple of high school friends became a turning point. With no one else to run sound, Richard built his own rig and brought their shows to life in restaurants and small venues around Boone and West Jefferson. Word quickly spread—his crisp, balanced mixes and can-do attitude made him the go-to guy for concerts across the High Country.
By 2012, Richard was running sound for full theatrical productions with Ashe County Little Theatre, a role that evolved into becoming the lead sound technician at the Ashe Civic Center. There, he partnered with the Ashe County Arts Council and Mountain Home Music to produce a monthly concert series—and his reputation only grew.
That collaboration eventually landed him behind the board for the Beer and Banjos series in Boone, hosted by The Dawgful Dead—a crew he's still rockin' with today through their newest venture: Midlife Trip.
Richard doesn’t just run the sound—he shapes it. With decades of performance experience and a deep love for live music, he brings every Midlife Trip show to life with clarity, warmth, and a whole lotta heart.
